The fun part about studying primitive masks is learning only how many unlike looks in that location are, spread beyond many different ages and cultures. Even simply a quick google search will show you what I mean.

The one thing the masks all seem to have in common though is that they have simple, exaggerated features fabricated in big and assuming ways. Colors too are all chosen to get the most attention, then you can understand why they might be so much fun for kids to draw.

How to Draw an African Mask

  1. Starting time with a simple U shape.

  2. Depict two heart shapes on the line.

  3. Add a brow line in a higher place the eyes.

  4. Draw a nose and rima oris.

  5. Add together two cheek shapes.

  6. Draw 2 ears.

  7. Add stripes on the brow.

  8. Trace with a marker and color.

  9. Finish with hair shapes on pinnacle.
